Music tree in the making

This is what I've done so far. Need more materials.

Weekend projects

Well we spent a good portion of the weekend finishing up some much needed work. One being replacing the rotting rail.

Another project was creating a sort of hide away. The bushes on the side will be blackberry bushes and will allow for some privacy for the kids. Hoping to add a wooden bottom and a bench soon.

Some Quoats

Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.
- David Polis

et us start with an understanding of outdoor education which is not bounded by common definitions. Let us imagine a pure, theoretical elixir which has no detectable chemical qualities, a pure homeopathic. When applied, it has infinitely perfect effects. All approaches to human healing, growth and sustenance might strive to be as such, a perfect supplement to human experience; so too might be the goal of outdoor education.
- James Neill, My Philosophy of Outdoor Education

Some facts from recent Out Door Symposium.

14.6% of low income children between the ages of 2-4 are obese.
Children who are cared for at home or by relatives are more likely to be obese.
400% increase in children ages 6-11 and 70% of those children will be obese as adults.
Children need at least 1 hour of vigorous activity a day.
Boys are more active then girls.
Active parents = active children
Natural materials and other landscape elements allows for more spatial-cognitive awareness and play.
View of nature like green plants equals less stress.
Nature helps reduce ADHD.

Now these are just facts that were brought up at a local outdoor symposium.

It begins

Well just put my order in for two 2x4 square foot gardening boxes. Yay can't wait to get them and let the children start gardening. Wont get much done since it is so late in the season.

So the madness begins. My goal is to create an environment rich in learning. No, not in a classroom, but outside in the fresh air. I'm taking my backyard to another dimension. One that nurtures love, respect, learning, and creativity. This journey will be long and hard but the final result will be so much more.
